Intersection rules for the VID provisional test

Work through the six illustrated rules below to understand who gives way, who may enter an intersection and when a vehicle must wait. Open each rule for its diagram and a plain-language explanation.

Rule 1

Never turn right facing oncoming traffic

In the intersection above, Car B cannot turn right in front of an oncoming car. Therefore Car B has to wait for Car A to pass first

Rule 2

Give way to traffic from your right

In the intersection above, Car C has a car on its right so it must give way. Car B goes first and then car B follows

Rule 3

Any car can move to the center of an intersection if it has nothing from its right

In the intersection above, Car B has nothing on its right so it can move to the center of the intersection. Whilst at the center, it can't turn right while facing oncoming traffic due to the first rule, so it waits for Car C to go first.

Rule 4

Traffic on the same road moves at the same time if none of them is turning right

In the intersection above, Car C and Car B move at the same time because none of them is turning right

Rule 5

At a roundabout, give way to traffic already circulating

In the intersection above, Car C waits for Car B and Car A because they are already in circulation

Rule 6

Any car facing a stop or give-way sign is the last car to go

In the intersection above, Car C goes last because it's facing a give-way or stop sign
